Hello and welcome to another episode of Top Ten Tuesday, you guys! This week’s theme is characters you’d name a child, pet, car, etc., and I took the liberty of doing one on my sims. 😂
What are sims, you ask? Well, I’m a bit of a gamer and have probably clocked at least 100 hours easy on this game called The Sims 2. I build houses, I create people (i.e. “sims”), get them jobs, marry them with others, and basically have them live their life. Over the past few years, I’ve taken to playing legacy challenges (basically a challenge where you play ten generations of sims) and using a naming theme to name my sims. Sometimes, I’d name them after book characters.
Now, I love playing female Sims because I get to dress them up and make them very pretty and doll-like, so this list consists of just female names. Let’s get to it. 😊
Lila Bard lived by a simple rule: if a thing was worth having, it was worth taking.
She held the silver pocket watch up to the faint glow of the streetlamp, admiring the metal’s polished shine, wondering what the engraved initials—L.L.E.—on the back might stand for. She’d nicked the watch off a gentleman, a clumsy collision on a too-crowded curb that had led to a swift apology, a hand on the shoulder to distract from a hand on the coat. Lila’s fingers weren’t just fast; they were light. A tip of the top hat and a pleasant good night, and she was the proud new owner of a timepiece, and he was on his way and none the wiser.
BOOK: A Darker Shade of Magic – V. E. Schwab | ★★★★☆
NAME MEANING: Lila means “play, amusement” in Sanskrit, and is apparently derived from the Arabic language, in which it means “night”. Delilah, Lila’s full first name, means “delicate, weak, languishing” in Hebrew — she was the lover of Samson in the bible’s Old Testament.
And then there was Adele Wolfe. The girl who used her twin brother’s papers so she could enter the all-male race. Who cut her hair and taped her breasts and raced like all the rest. The only girl who had ever competed. The victor of the ninth Axis Tour.
Victor Adele Wolfe was a classic Reich beauty—pale, pale, pale—with corn-silk hair and Nordic eyes. This face was aired all over the Reichssender (the television’s only state-approved channel) just days after her victory and astonishing confession that she was not actually Felix Wolfe but his sister.
BOOK: Wolf by Wolf – Ryan Graudin | ★★★★★
NAME MEANING: Adele is a form of Adela, originally a short form of names beginning with the Germanic element adal which means “noble”.
“You are a miracle, Mare Barrow, an impossibility. Something even I can’t understand, and I have seen all of you.”
“That was you?” I almost screech, reaching up to cradle my head again. “You were in my mind? My memories? My nightmares?”
“If you know someone’s fear, you know them.” She blinks at me like I’m some stupid creature. “And I had to know what it is we’re dealing with.”
BOOK: Red Queen – Victoria Aveyard | ★★☆☆☆
NAME MEANING: In English, it’s the female of a horse or other equine animal. It’s also a diminutive of Maria — Miryam in Hebrew, where it means anything from “sea of bitterness” and “sea or sorrow” to “wished-for child” and “rebellion”.
With a final deep breath I leaped in the air and began throwing my body back and forth, my right hand yanking the strings of my silent guitar like I needed my fingers to bleed. And when I closed my eyes, it wasn’t out of fear. It was because what I was feeling right there on that stage consumed me. I felt every part of that animal music, felt it eat me up and spit me out, and what emerged was a me a thousand times more powerful than Piper Vaughan. I was Piper Vaughan, guitar hero—spiritual descendant of Jimi Hendrix and proponent of pure anarchy.
And I ROCKED.
BOOK: Five Flavours of Dumb – Antony John | ★★★★☆
NAME MEANING: A person who plays on a pipe (a flute).
The little girl had sat on the bed beside her brother. A black tomcat was pressed to her chest, purring softly. But he’d puffed up and spat when he saw a deeper shadow at the curtain’s feet. Claws dug into his girl’s hands and she’d dropped him into the path of an oncoming maidservant, who fell with a shriek. Dona Corvere turned on her daughter, regal and furious.
“Mia Corvere, keep that wretched animal out from underfoot or we’ll leave it behind!”
And as simple as that, we have her name.
BOOK: Nevernight – Jay Kristoff | ★★★☆☆
NAME MEANING: In Italian, it means “mine”. It’s also another diminutive of Maria.
This will be the last time I wake up here. I keep my eyes closed, savour my final moments lying in bed listening to the cacophony of morning sounds from nearby Auburn Road. If I concentrate hard enough I can bring the place alive: the fishmonger’s van rumbling around the corner and over the uneven asphalt of the alley behind the mall adjacent to our house. […] There’s something for everyone here, and I’m leaving this corner of my world, the only world I’ve known since arriving in Australia from Afghanistan ten years ago, to move to the lower North Shore of Sydney.
BOOK: When Michael Met Mina – Randa Abdel-Fattah | ★★★★☆
NAME MEANING: Means “fish” in Sanskrit. Also the name of the daughter of the Hindu goddess Usha as well as the daughter of the god Kubera.
I turned around—Chris was over by the keg. When I raised my arms like, WTF, he turned over his empty cup, then made a sad face and pointed to the line of red-faced guys in front of him. Obviously he hadn’t taken me very seriously when I’d said, Let’s get out of here as quickly as possible.
I pulled out my phone and started texting Dylan while I made my way to Chris. Knowing her, she was probably in the back seat of her boyfriend’s beat-up Chevy Malibu, but I wanted Brownie points for coming out at all. Really, I was only here to see Josh Mitchell, this Marine I used to work with who had just come home from Afghanistan. I could have waited to see him some other time, but it seemed like a dick move; someone comes back from fighting a war, you go to their homecoming party.
BOOK: I’ll Meet You There – Heather Demetrios | ★★★★☆
NAME MEANING: A variant of Skylar, which is a variant of Schuyler… which comes from a Dutch surname meaning “scholar”.
“It one hundred and fifty percent sucks. But—God, Scarlett, you look awful.”
My eyes are puffy, and my throat’s so sore from crying that I can barely tell her “No shit.” I stayed up all night with the rest of the heartbroken Lycanthrope community, trying to strategize a way to get it back on the air. The first stage is denial, right? That’s half of us, writing passionate letters to the network. The other half—people I used to see on Tumblr every day—are blackballing the show and moving on.
BOOK: Scarlett Epstein Hates It Here – Anna Breslaw | ★★☆☆☆
NAME MEANING: From a surname which denoted a person who sold or made clothes made of scarlet (a kind of cloth, ultimately derived from Persian).
“You’ll have to marry a tailor, my little Agnieszka,” my father would say, laughing, when he came home from the forest at night and I went running to meet him, grubby-faced, with at least one hole about me, and no kerchief.
He swung me up anyway and kissed me; my mother only sighed a little: what parent could really be sorry, to have a few faults in a Dragon-born girl?
BOOK: Uprooted – Naomi Novik | ★★★★☆
NAME MEANING: Polish form of Agnes, which basically means “chaste”.
“Jules. This isn’t working.”
Queen Arsinoe stands in the center of the clearing, dressed all in black as the queens do, looking like an inkblot in the snow. She has been trying to bloom a rose from a rosebud, but in the palm of her hand, the bud remains green, and firmly closed.
“Pray,” Jules says.
They have sung this same song a thousand times over the years. And Jules knows what comes next.
Arsinoe holds out her hand. “Why don’t you help?”
BOOK: Three Dark Crowns – Kendare Blake | ★★★☆☆
NAME MEANING: Possibly derived from the Greek word arsis meaning “raised, lifted” and nous (meaning “intellect, mind”).
