The Versatile Blogger Award

I was tagged to do this by Jess at Blogging Everything Beautiful ages ago but promptly forgot it until Larkin at Wonderfilled Reads tagged me more recently, which is a shame because I always really enjoyed tags that have bloggers list some facts about themselves!

Personally, getting to know the blogger is always as fun as getting to know the blog (if not more fun), so I hope you enjoy this post. ❤

The Rules

  1. Show the award on your blog.
  2. Thank the person who has nominated you.
  3. Share 7 different facts about yourself.
  4. Nominate a few blogs of your choice.
  5. Link your nominees to let them know of your choice.

1) I used to write fanfiction.

When I was 12-13 years old I watched Naruto and became TOTALLY obsessed with the series, and I started writing fanfiction because I wasn’t happy with the amount of screentime my favourite characters were getting. I went on to ship Neji and Tenten (at which point most people would be like, Tenten who?) and wrote tons of stuff for them.

Later I also wrote fanfiction for Bleach, Kuragehime, Harry Potter, and other titles. You can see all my work (my pride and shame) here.

2) I used to play otome games.

An otome game (乙女ゲーム otome gēmu?, literally “maiden game”) is a story based video game that is targeted towards the female market. Generally one of the goals, besides the main plot goal, is to develop a romantic relationship between the female player character and one of several male, or occasionally female characters. — Wikipedia

During my last year of uni, I was totally obsessed with playing otome games — essentially dating sims in visual novel format: you play as a girl and you have several characters you can go for. My Tumblr is wholly dedicated to it, and my favourite love interest is Riki Yanase from Love Letter from Thief X. You guessed it: he’s an art thief, super ‘hot’, and just the quintessential bad boy figure. #forshamereg

3) I’m not a huge movie person.

I like them, but I’m not very dedicated to watching them. I haven’t seen tons of the biggest must-sees: Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, The Hobbit, American Psycho, The Shawshank Redemption, Inglourious Basterds, Star Trek, all Star Wars except Episode IV

Basically I don’t really watch any ‘serious’ stuff and tend to go for light-hearted titles. Name a romantic comedy and I’ve probably watched it. I’m not super big on romantic dramas either. 😛

4) I’m a third-culture kid.

I was born in Indonesia but my family is Chinese and I spent my ‘adulting’ years in Australia. Culturally (and to my parents’ utter disgust and disappointment) I’m much, much more Australian than I am Indonesian, but there are also certain preferences I hold on to that are probably more Chinese-influenced than anything else.

I think of Australia as home but I feel—and probably forever will feel—guilty not coming back to Indonesia, but I love the former too much to voluntarily leave.

5) I’ve always found it really strange that it’s called an ‘award’ and yet we’re required to nominate it to other people.

No one took Leonardo diCaprio aside when he (FINALLY) won the Oscar and told him he has to nominate 15 other people for Best Actor last February!  These awards are certainly in good spirit, but I think it should have been called a ‘tag’ — and yes, this is me being pedantic. 😛

6) My great loves: Pokemon, The Sims, and Friends.

I revisit all three things annually. Every year, I restart a game of Pokemon (normally FireRed because it’s so close to my heart), play through ten generations of a sim family in The Sims 2, and rewatch all ten seasons, 236 episodes of Friends.

7) I love reading internet advice columns.

It’s mostly because it gives me perspective: everyone has problems, and I’m not alone in them. These three are my big favourites:

  • /r/relationships — for when you want to chill and just bask in the drama that is other people’s lives.
  • Captain Awkward — for scripts of what to say in difficult situations and more or less gentle but objective advice.
  • Dear Sugar — for Cheryl Strayed’s gorgeous, gorgeous way of describing love, loss and life.

  1. Wonderful & interesting facts, Reg! I actually love movies when I have the time to watch them, but I totally understand where you are coming from! 🙂

    -Jess @jbelkbooks

    • Thanks, Jess! I love movies too, but I’m just simply not interested in some of the ‘classics’ despite people telling me I just HAVE to watch certain things… especially when it’s been spoiled to death so I kind of know what’s coming even without having watched them. 🙂

  2. OMG I grew up with The Sims! I started with Sim City but I got more obsessed with Sims Unleashed, Makin Magic, etc. Until now, I still find myself checking the game on my PC every now and then.

LOL that comment on awards is absolutely on point. This should be called a tag rather than an award. I was confused when I got my first “award” then why I had to nominate others. I thought this was a spam or something back then. LOL

    • AHH YAY A FELLOW SIM-PLAYER! I don’t remember ever playing Sim City but The Sims 1 was definitely one of my first game-loves. Have you checked out Sims 4 yet?

Oh no! Haha, I can definitely see why you thought it was spam — it could very easily translate into one of those ‘send this to 15 people if you don’t want this chain message to happen!’ type of thing. 😛

  3. Most of my cousins are now Australian too, they left when they were in middle school and never looked back and that’s totally fine by me. I think you shouldn’t feel bad about not coming bad if you feel much more at home there. 🙂
Anyways, I never finished any pokemon series because I’m a quitter. LOL. It didn’t stop me from keep starting a new game throughout the years though.
Thanks for nominating, uhh I mean tagging, me. 😀

    • Oh wow, middle school! How long ago was that? I think for me it’s a bit different because my parents are still in Indonesia and refuse to move, which is fine but a bit frustrating when they guilt-trip me about it, haha.

I never finished any series either… unless by finishing you mean defeating the Pokemon League. That’s about as far as I usually go in the game, I think, because after that you’ve pretty much finished the main storyline. 😛

      No worries! ❤

  4. Thanks so much for the nomination Reg! You know until you mentioned it I never thought about how we get the award and then nominate other people, but it is kind of weird now I think about it 🙂
Also I’m the same with movies as well. The only films you mentioned that I’ve seen is The Matrix and the Star Wars films. I mentioned to my friends the other day that I’d never seen The Notebook and they looked at me like I was insane!

    • No worries, Beth! Yeah, it’s just a bit weird, isn’t it? It could’ve been called a tag and nothing would have changed except for the name.

I’ve actually only seen The Notebook once or twice in my life only because it’s on TV, and one of my best friends LOVES it. Otherwise I don’t think I’d have picked it up by myself… it’s kind of dramatic and I’m not often in the mood for romantic dramas. 😛

      • Yeah, the more you think about it the more weird it seems, but it didn’t occur to me until you mentioned it in your post!
Most of my friends love it as well! It comes up in conversation a lot of the time and they cannot believe I haven’t seen it but it just doesn’t seem like my kind of movie. I’m not really a Nicholas Sparks fan!

        • I think it’s because it’s really quite dramatic and has all the tropes people like, i.e. forbidden romance, love over the years, instant attraction, etc. I actually dislike Nicholas Sparks and tend to stay away from his works/movies/books now myself, tbh. 😛

          Liked by 1 person

          • I’ve never actually read a Nicholas Sparks book so I can’t really say whether I’d like them or not, and to be honest I’m not really interested in trying them either. Although I did see the movie version of The Longest Ride and I did really like that!

  5. Okay Naruto. I know a lot of people that watch this but I want to know why I should watch it. Now, I am that shame gif right now cause I am baffled at how you have not watch lord of the rings! Other than that I’m actually not really a dedicated movie watcher. especially since there are so many miniseries being released that are a lot more compelling and exciting. I will happily join you for a Friends binge watching sesh. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve binge watched that show haha.

    • I think it’s just one of those long-lasting series that many grew up with (including me). It’s finished now, though! I much, MUCH prefer the first part of the whole series, and it’s pretty easy to binge on it once you’re into it. For me, I just love the side characters and the different ninja abilities that people have, it’s pretty interesting. 😛

My goodness, me too. I think I’ve watched at least most episodes 10 times, at the very least, and this is not even an exaggeration. Do you have a favourite character/couple? ❤

      Liked by 1 person

      • I’ll be sure to add it to my must binge list haha.
Phoebe and Chandler will always be my favourites. Couple wise, no one can beat Chandler and Joeys bromance but romantically Chandler and Monica are the sweetest. Ross’ possessiveness over Rachel when he felt threatened by Mark was a huge turn off for me. Plus the whole back and forth between them was tiring after a while. No thank you.

        • Chandler is my favourite too! So sweet, and honestly probably one of the least jerk-ish ones of the six, haha.

Ross’s possessiveness over Rachel turns me off too; I really DO NOT appreciate that kind of thing. And if i think about it too much, it’s ridiculous how long time has passed and they still get jealous about each other even though they’re not together anymore…

  6. Thanks for tagging me Reg! It means a lot for me to connect with you through our blogs because I don’t know any other bloggers and book blogging can get lonely. I hope we keep connecting over stuff like this!

    • No worries, Rinchen! Aww, if it gets lonely you should follow more people or join Twitter; there are tons of book bloggers wanting to connect out there. And yeah, sure, I’d love that as well! Thanks for your comment. 🙂
